Lights, Camera, Action! John Muigai's Road to New York University with AFEX's Support

Can you tell us about your journey and decision to pursue film and photography in college?

I have been interested in pursuing film from a young age. I am incredibly passionate about theatre, drama and literature and all those interests culminated in an affinity for film. I chose to pursue it at college level because much as one can do it without necessarily having studied at college level, having a degree from a renowned university will set you apart from others in this very competitive industry. Moreover, a lot of colleges offer work placements and exposure opportunities that can really give one a leg-up in their journey into the arts.

What inspired your passion for film and photography, particularly in the context of your experiences in Nairobi?

As a young African Filmmaker, I have grown up on Western Media and watched the global cinema scene be engulfed by its influence. I either saw a few African stories that were built on stereotypes, caricatures and Western ideals, or just didn't see them at all. This underrepresented of my community in the media has likely been a catalyst to much of the misinformation and false global perceptions of us.

Experiencing this great injustice over many years equipped me with a unique perspective that has allowed me to feel empathetic toward the plethora of other people in a similar situation of marginalization. I believe that it is paramount for people to feel recognized and important in any community, be it through their sexuality, race, gender or nationality.

How did AFEX help you with your college application process and SAT preparation? What were some of the challenges you faced during the college application process, and how did you overcome them?

AFEX was a big help with my college applications-particularly with SAT preparation. Since my school follows the British Curriculum, the SAT was incredibly foreign to me at first and the Math and English is very different from what I was used to learning in school. AFEX helped me bridge that gap and practice these new concepts and ideas in a conducive environment. I don’t think I would ever have been able to get the score I did on my own, and adapt to the test’s unique style as fast as I did, without AFEX. Common app is also a bit of a complicated portal, with a lot of questions and important information that may not entirely be straightforward to anyone new to it. AFEX helped me navigate the application and stay on top of deadlines.

What made you choose New York University over SCAD and Loyola Marymount University?

While SCAD and LMU are top film schools globally, NYU is simply just part of the complete upper echelon of film schools. They have a star-studded alumnus, with directors like Spike Lee and Martin Scorsese, unique connections with the industry and fantastic facilities for students. It is also in the art capital of the world, New York, and so that was also quite appealing to me.

What advice would you give to other students who are considering pursuing a career in film and photography?

Start building your portfolio early. Universities are after great academics, but thousands of applicants will have the same A*’s as you. What will set you apart in the long run is a wide portfolio that shows you have a ton of experience in film. It may not have to be the highest quality work but just something that demonstrates your interest and shows that you would benefit from higher education in film. Make as much as you can early, so that you have a lot of work to choose from when submitting your portfolio.

How do you plan to make the most of your time at New York University and further develop your skills in your chosen field?

I hope to make full use of this once in a lifetime opportunity at NYU, by pursuing internships and working with world class staff to cultivate my skills and gain as much experience as I can at this stellar institution.
