Purity Wanjiku: Embracing Perseverance and Triumph in Her College application Journey
Can you share a little bit about your background and the challenges you faced during your three-year gap year after high school?
My name is Purity Wanjiku, and I took three gap years due to financial difficulties and COVID-19. I come from a humble background, and being a part of AFEX was a huge privilege for me.
What motivated you to pursue your dreams of attending a renowned liberal arts college despite the obstacles you encountered during your gap years?
I wanted to study in an environment where I could have one-on-one interaction with lecturers who knew me and could push me to be the best version of myself. I could also take classes that interested me, even if they were unrelated to my major.
How did you come across the AFEX College Application Program, and what made you decide to join?
I was introduced to AFEX by a family friend whose son had gone through the US college applications with AFEX and successfully gained admission to schools with good financial aid.
Can you describe your experience with the AFEX College Application Program? How did the program support you in addressing the gap year and preparing your college application?
I came to AFEX early in the year, around February/March. I didn't know much about the application process, including colleges, but I got very friendly consultants who were willing to share their knowledge with me. My mentor helped me understand the different types of schools that exist and what to look for when choosing a school, such as curriculum and location.
Let's talk about the SAT Prep Program. How did participating in the program help you achieve your impressive score of 1460? What strategies or techniques did you find most helpful?
Initially, we had SAT classes three times a week, which later increased to four, then five days a week. During the first few weeks, we were taught fundamental SAT skills. In later weeks, we did practice test papers daily and reviewed them, correcting our mistakes before going home. Sometimes, we were divided into groups to discuss our work. This was very helpful because I realized I was not the only one facing challenges in certain areas, and it helped me gauge my progress. Additionally, studying for the SAT alone can be exhausting and mentally stressful.
How do you believe the AFEX College Application Program and the SAT Prep Program specifically contributed to your overall success in gaining acceptance into Bryn Mawr College?
Looking back on my college application, I am grateful that AFEX was there with me every step of the way. AFEX provided me with milestones of what I was supposed to have done, with early deadlines so that I wouldn't rush at the last minute. They made sure I wrote and submitted all the required documents early, which greatly contributed to my acceptance. AFEX also recommended a list of schools that they knew I would thrive in based on my profile. Bryn Mawr College was one of them, and I applied Early Decision.
Can you share some highlights or memorable moments from your journey with the AFEX College Application Program and preparing for college?
One highlight was when I finally completed my personal statement. I had written countless versions, most of which were rejected because they didn't truly reflect who I was (I am also not a strong writer). I also enjoyed going for "smokies" and hotdogs for lunch with my classmates, who have now become my very good friends. Another memorable experience was when I went to AFEX the day after receiving my acceptance letter to seek help in understanding my financial aid package (which covered full aid). When I arrived, the staff was in a meeting, but they stopped to clap and cheer for me. It brought tears to my eyes because I couldn't remember the last time people were that happy for me.
How has this entire experience, including the gap years and the support you received, shaped your personal growth and aspirations?
The hardships I faced during my gap years have made me a strong person and taught me to never give up on myself, no matter the circumstances. My mantra is: "I'm strong, resourceful, and the best version of myself."
What advice would you give to other students who may be facing challenges or considering a gap year before pursuing higher education?
Challenges make you strong and stretch the limits of what you can handle. They also give you survival skills that prepare you for life in the US because life is not always a bed of roses.
Looking ahead, what are your goals and aspirations as you embark on your studies at Bryn Mawr College? How do you plan to make a positive impact in your chosen field?
I plan to major in Gender and Sexuality Studies, but I also look forward to exploring different fields that are interconnected through Bryn Mawr's 360 program. I want to enrich lives, especially those of women and children in Kenya, by alleviating poverty and promoting gender equality.
